We believe that giving help goes beyond creed, religion, and status. Since our inception, we have supported a nationwide network of food supplies and provided emergency food and support to people locked in poverty. We campaign for change to end the need for food banks in Sri Lanka as well as the rest of the region.

Spotlight: Sri Lanka

An island located south of the Indian subcontinent, the nation-state of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) contains diverse landscapes ranging from beaches, rainforests and tea plantations to ancient Buddhist ruins and buzzing metropolitan cities. Sri Lankan society has also been influenced by varying degrees of colonial impact and modernization. Diversity is further evident in the cultural landscape, with Sri Lanka accommodating several ethnic linguistic and religious groups. Sri Lankans tend to identify themselves according to their ethnicity family, religion or birthplace and will often remain loyal to those a part of those groups. While the country has seen ethnic tensions in the past, the two largest ethnic groups – the Sinhalese (74.9%) and the Tamil (15.4%) – often peacefully interact with one another.

Going beyond the distance, beyond faith

The freedom to choose and express religious affiliation is guaranteed under the Sri Lankan constitution. Buddhism is the major religion followed in Sri Lanka, with 70.2% of the population identifying as Buddhist. Of the remaining Sri Lankan population, 12.6% identify as Hindu, 9.7% identify as Muslim and 6.1% identify as Christian. The social landscape of the country tends to show an association between ethnicity and religion. The Sinhalese majority generally follows Buddhism, which has seen the faith gain special status over other religions despite not being the official religion of the country. Those who identify as Hindu tend to be ethnic Tamils, while those who identify as Muslim are generally Sri Lankan Moors. Christians are typically Burghers.
